I stumbled across Grassini Family Vineyards a few years ago in downtown Santa Barbara. I was with the family window shopping before dinner and found this quant little courtyard tucked away off State Street. When I peaked in, it was like stumbling on the Secret Garden for wine lovers (with kids!). The courtyard was secure enough for the children to find an opportunity to play while I sipped a glass (or two) on the Grassini patio. The wines were lovely, but their Articondo stole the show for me.
This week, I had the opportunity to relive the tasting in my backyard with a friend. And like the Santa Barbara experience, the children were still in tow! If you find yourself in downtown Santa Barbara, definitely stop in if you have a few minutes to spare. It’s worth it.
2015 Grassini Articondo Bordeaux Blend ($45)
A cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Cabernet Franc (15%), and Petit Verdot (50%!), the Articondo offers aromas of roasted coffee, black plum, and blackberry with a hint of earthy minerality. Named after Larry Grassini’s grandfather, Articondo was the first member of the Grassini family to leave Pisa, Italy for a new life in America.
Vinous 92 Points
“The 2015 Proprietary Red Blend Articondo is another terrific red from Grassini done in the more understated style that has characterized these wines for the last few years. Quite surprisingly, the Articondo is built on a core of Petit Verdot, and yet the wine is pliant and super-expressive, even in the early going. Sweet dark cherry, plum, lavender, menthol and spice are some of the many notes that develop in this very pretty red. — Antonio Galloni, Vinous”
