If you’re seeking a wine from Uruguay, it’s hard to go wrong with Bodega Garzón. The Garzón terroir is ballast, finding its origin in the Crystalline Basement and producing some of the oldest soils on the planet at over 2.5 billion years old. And with the Atlantic Ocean only 18 km away, this leads to a steady, fresh breeze gently wrapping its arms around the vines. When Alejandro Bulgheroni and his wife Bettina discovered Garzón, they not only set out to create the most modern viticulture in Uruguay, but to offer premium wines with an intense personality and a deep sense of belonging to the land.
The 2018 Tannat Reserva does just that and at a price point that is extremely approachable. A ripe blackberry aroma mixes with violets and green-peppercorn on the nose. The palate is ripe and full bodied, with blackberry jam and spice flavors. A satisfying length and juiciness that is drinking well now. If you like a unique full-bodied red that won’t break the bank, this is it.
Decanter 93 Points
The focus here, as it is with all of the Garzón wines, is on fruit expression and terroir rather than wood. It’s a wonderfully stylish expression of the variety that handles its alcohol well, showing flavours of bramble and blackberry with darker liquorice, fine-grained tannins and very subtle vanilla spice. Drinking Window 2021 – 2025.
