Sine Qua Non. Saxum. Austin Hope. You’re on notice…
There’s a new kid on the block. From up-and-coming star winemaker, Brett Urness, comes the 2018 Levo Tearing at the Seams. This is a bold, iconoclastic, and promising wine that reminds me of some of the best out of Paso (ahem, the list above).
Winemaker Notes: “Stylistically, I aim to make rich, structured, voluptuous California red wines that represent the dynamic and vast Central Coast without sacrificing varietal correctness, electricity and ‘lift.’”
This blend 48% Syrah, 34% Petite Sirah, and the rest Graciano from Santa Barbara County, which was recently awarded Wine Region Of The Year in Wine Enthusiasts Wine Star Awards 2021.
Urness was recently featured in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate which describes, “His Levo wines are known for their aromatic lift and varietal delineation. The etymology of Latin verb levō means ‘rise, elevate and lift up.'”
JD 94 Points
“Based on 48% Syrah, 34% Petite Sirah, and the rest Graciano, the inky hued 2018 TATS has a beautiful nose of black and blue fruits, ground pepper, smoked game, and bouquet garni. Rich, full-bodied, and balanced on the palate, it’s a rocking Rhône-like blend with loads of character.”
