Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Santa Maria Valley, Presqu’ile Winery offers an enchanting blend of history, breathtaking views, and exquisite wines. Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing their renowned Food and Wine Tour, an exploration of both palate and panorama that left a lasting impression.
The day began with a glass of Presqu’ile’s 2018 Sparkling Rosé, a vibrant and effervescent introduction to our journey. As we stood on the estate’s patio, the lively bubbles danced alongside notes of fresh strawberries and floral undertones, perfectly mirroring the lush beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Our guide shared the intriguing history of Presqu’ile Winery, a family-owned estate dedicated to crafting exceptional cool-climate wines. The winery’s name, Presqu’ile, meaning “almost an island” in French, is a tribute to a beloved family gathering place on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that was lost to Hurricane Katrina. Established by the Murphy family, who have been farming for four generations, Presqu’ile Winery is a testament to their love of the land and a desire to create something enduring in the Santa Maria Valley.
Our next destination was the wine cave, where the cool, earthy ambiance provided a perfect backdrop for understanding the art of winemaking. Here, we savored the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp and refreshing expression of Santa Maria Valley’s terroir. With aromas of zesty citrus and a delicate minerality, this wine elegantly complemented the detailed explanation of Presqu’ile’s meticulous harvesting and winemaking process.
The tour continued with a leisurely stroll to the winery’s serene pond, a tranquil moment before we ascended to the private veranda. Overlooking the vast Santa Maria Valley, the Sta. Rita Hills, and even glimpses of the Pacific Ocean, this location was a feast for the eyes and appetite. Our farm-to-table lunch was paired with a delightful selection of wines, each telling its own story.
The 2021 Chardonnay from Presqu’ile Vineyard was a standout, with its harmonious blend of creamy texture and bright acidity, offering notes of ripe apple and subtle oak. It was a prelude to a fascinating comparative tasting of two Pinot Noirs.
The 2021 Presqu’ile Pinot Noir from Presqu’ile Vineyard displayed a beautifully complex bouquet of cherry and spice, while the 2021 Presqu’ile Pinot Noir from Bien Nacido Vineyard offered a more structured profile with hints of dark berry and earth, showcasing the nuanced differences between these two esteemed sites.
A highlight of the tasting was the 2021 Presqu’ile Pinot Noir from Rancho Ontiveros Vineyard. This selection was not just a treat for the senses but a journey into history. Rancho Ontiveros Vineyard is steeped in heritage, tracing back to 1781 when Josef Ontiveros rode from Mexico to Alta California. For over nine generations, the Ontiveros family has farmed the Santa Maria Valley, creating wines that reflect both the durability of their legacy and the unique terroir. This wine’s vibrant acidity and layers of red fruit and savory notes made it a truly special experience.
We concluded our tasting adventure with the 2020 Presqu’ile Syrah from Presqu’ile Vineyard. This bold and full-bodied wine, with its rich tapestry of dark fruit, pepper, and leather, provided a satisfying and memorable end to our culinary exploration.
