When it comes to Riesling, I’m a big fan of Mosel, Germany’s own Dr. Loosen and the 2018 Erdener Treppchen Alte Reben GG did not disappoint. Family-owned for over 200 years, the winery has been managed by Erni Loosen since 1988. From a parcel of extremely old vines (“Alte Reben”), this wine was kept on the full lees for a year before bottling. The extended maturation time allows the wine to develop greater texture and a natural harmony. The acidity is pointed, intense, and racy which owes its traits to the red-slate cliffs. Nectarine and white peach flavors are concentrated with a spicy, earthy finish. (JS 96; WE 95)
I’ve tasted many of Dr. Loosen’s Rieslings over the years; if you’re looking for a rock solid “go to” Riesling, none of them will disappoint.
