Jean-Charles Boisset fans, this is for you. In 2018, Jean-Charles purchased an old Victorian home adjacent to the legendary Oakville Grocery—California’s oldest continuously operating grocery store, which opened in 1881. Boisset painstakingly restored the residential building and transformed it into a stunning winery and an interactive museum.
Enter 1881 Cabernet. 1881 is all about terroir, and Napa has that in spades. The goal of 1881 is to highlight that diversity while paying homage to the area’s earliest winemaking pioneers.
The 2018 vintage was a winemaker’s dream, with a long, cool growing season that allowed for slow, even ripening. Blended with 4% Zinfandel and 3% Petite Sirah, the Napa Cab is a mix of warmer-climate hillside fruit and cooler-climate grapes from the valley floor.
Wine Enthusiast 90 Points
Chocolaty mocha richness dominates alongside cherry vanilla and toasted oak in this soft, approachable crowd-pleaser. Aged in American oak, it retains a supple sweetness through the finish.
Wine Spectator 90 Points
Very fresh and forward, with a blast of cherry pie and blackberry compote notes, unencumbered by toast and ending with a floral flourish amid the fruit.
