Looking for a high-end Riesling at a fantastic price? This is for you.
Few names stand out for excellence as much as Selbach-Oster does in Germany. Their records date back to the 1660s when they were making wine and shipping it down the Mosel in their own boats. Today tradition still guides Johannes Selbach as he crafts some of the finest wines on the slopes of the Mosel. Honestly, Selbach’s properties, besides being some of the finest spots for Reisling to grow, are some of the most picturesque in the wine world. Steep, neat rows of vines flow uninterrupted down to the broad Mosel river and overlook almost perfect German towns. It really is gorgeous.
Perfection is the drive for this estate and each bottling shows the best and brightest that each site can produce. Wehlener Sonnenuhr overlooks the Mosel and is prized for its blue Devonian slate, which imparts that trademark crisp, clean minerality that has made German Riesling so famous. The whole line up of wines from the renowned estate show elegance, finesse and absolutely spellbinding flavors!
Auslese does mean “sweet” but this isn’t the syrupy, ultra-sugary style sweet you might be thinking. For Selbach’s wine, the sweetness is meant to both balance and complement the racy acidity and precise minerality. The combination is a masterpiece. Each sip is refreshing and inviting, it’s honestly hard to put down this wine!

From six-year-old vines, the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ** is very intense yet feminine and charming on the nose, like a naked Rubens woman in oil on canvas. The wine reveals perfect botrytis or overripeness that doesn’t take anything away from the precision and finesse. It is round, gorgeously lush and voluptuous on the palate yet with crystalline, highly refined acidity and structure. This is a spectacularly intense, warm and ripe Auslese that is opulent yet lean, racy and piquant, finishing with stimulating salinity and precision. A fabulous wine, a showstopper if you so will. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.
James Suckling 96
At once very concentrated, with plenty of dried stone fruit and floral honey, yet still graceful and refined. Intense citrusy freshness at the still tightly wound finale. Decades of aging potential. Drink or hold.
