Simply put, Ken Wright Cellars is the OG of Oregon Pinot Noir.
WE 94 Pts. and 4.2 Vivino Stars Rating.
Ken Wright has been making Pinot Noir in Oregon for over 40 years and has been integral to the success of the state’s wine industry. Early on, he recognized the exceptional potential and diverse terroir of the region while at Panther Creek and played an instrumental role in organizing the Willamette Valley’s six newest AVAs. He even wrote the proposal for and served as the first president of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. His passion for terroir (Robert Parker has called him “the ultimate terroirist”) has led to his extensive geological studies of the area to determine the best sites and clones for each of his 13 single-vineyard Pinot Noir bottlings.
The McCrone vineyard is just 7.7 acres, planted in 1991. Classic Wellsdale and Willakenzie soils of ancient marine sediments are the culprits behind McCrone’s structure and elegance. “This is one of the top vineyard selections in this vintage, among a select group, notable for its outstanding focus and concentration,” raves Wine Enthusiast.
Wright uses the exact same vinification and aging practices for each of his single-vineyard offerings, aging in 100% French oak for a year, allowing the differences of each unique site to shine through. The 2015 McCrone is “Still compact, its purple fruits are lightly spiced and deftly balanced; leaving little doubt that further improvement is just around the corner,” says Enthusiast’s Paul Gregutt in his 94-point review, which calls for an incredible drinking window of “now through 2035.”
