In 2000, Dave Phinney created The Prisoner—a Zinfandel-led blend that took the mixed-variety bargain jug wine to new heights, reimagining it as a top-shelf, mind-bending brilliant wine anyone would be proud to drink (or collect). After he sold The Prisoner, he was forbidden to make Zinfandel for a time. So, with a wink to that “dry spell,” he devised 8 Years in the Desert, which Robb Report gushed is “for lovers of ripe California fruit.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 93 Points
“Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Zinfandel Blend 8 Years in the Desert delivers notions of stewed plums, baked raspberries and fruitcake with hints of powdered cinnamon, clove oil, tree bark, hoisin and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of ripe, spicy black and red fruits, supported by chewy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy. 35,700 cases were made.”
