Historic Stags’ Leap traces its roots all the way back to 1872, when the Grigsby family first planted grapes, making them one of Napa Valley’s earliest estates. Nearly 150 years later, the Stags’ Leap name is practically synonymous with top-shelf red wine from the region. The 2018 “Investor” is a plummy and juicy blend that might be this historic producer’s most accessible red. Plus, it’s crafted by Christophe Paubert, formerly of legendary Bordeaux greats Chateau d’Yquem and Gruaud-Larose. Pedigree, prestige, and immediately delicious drinking? You just found your safe, game-changing investment-level red!
James Suckling 95 Points
This is blowzy and rich, yet there are plenty of tannins to back it up, and they are dusty and firm at that. Full-bodied, but not heavy in any way. Layered and already delicious. A blend of merlot, petite sirah, cabernet sauvignon and malbec. Drink or hold.
