WEEKLY WINE ROUND-UP (#34)

Picked this up a few years back while visiting Rusack Vineyards in Solvang, CA (which, btw has a phenomenal patio under a series of old, majestic oak trees). Great place for a picnic while you indulge in their line up. Rusack is also where I first discovered Santa Catalina Island wines. Yes, Rusack grows wine on an island off the coast of Southern California! Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel to be exact. Given the cool-climate of the island, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir didn’t surprise me, but Zinfandel? It’s not every day you find a cool-climate Zin, particularly one that originated from vines discovered on Catalina’s sister island, Santa Cruz. Definitely worth a try if you visit their tasting room. You will absolutely be blown away and take a few bottles home. It’s that unique . . . and delicious.

But enough about Catalina, this Weekly Wine Round-Up is about Rusack’s Solomon Hills Vineyard Pinot Noir. Arguably the coldest vineyard in all of Santa Maria Valley, and the most western vineyard in the winegrowing region, Solomon Hills produces unique and powerful grapes. The bouquet opens with hints of violet and earthiness while bold notes of red fruit engulf your palate. The silky tannins have allowed the wine to age well and stand tall 8-years running.

While I should have saved this bottle for a special occasion, it was calling me and I needed it. And as I’ve said in past blogs, you don’t always need a special occasion to make a special moment. Happy Hunting!

This excellent bottling blends power with finesse, showing fresh red and black cherries, a smoky earthiness and pretty hints of red rose petals and hibiscus on the nose. The flavors are very cohesive and expertly woven on the palate, where bright red fruit is lifted by star anise spice and framed by a taut texture and uplifting acid. Stunning depth.
